LAS VEGAS— At least 58 people have been killed and more than 400 were transported to hospital after a gunman opened fire on crowds at a music festival in Las Vegas in the worst mass shooting in US history.

The Clark County district attorney, Steve Woodson, takes the podium.

“This was a classic WMD. This was a weapon and a man of mass destruction,” he says. “This doesn’t involve politics. All of us are Nevadans. We’re working to get through this.”

The mayor, Carolyn Goodman, speaks next about the gunman.

“This is a crazed lunatic full of hate. We don’t know much about his background. But it’s certainly not an extension about what we believe in.”

President Donald Trump responded to the mass shooting in Las Vegas with a message of unity and hope, saying that the attack was an "act of pure evil."

"Our unity cannot be shattered by evil. Our bonds cannot be broken by violence," Mr Trump said. "It is our love that defines us today, and always will forever."

"In times such as these, I know we are searching for some kind of meaning, some kind of light in the darkness," Mr Trump said. "The answers do not come easy."

Hillary Clinton has responded to the shooting in Las Vegas with a sharp attack on the National Rifle Association(NRA).

“Las Vegas, we are grieving with you - the victims, those who lost loved ones, the responders, & all affected by this cold-blooded massacre,” Ms Clinton wrote in a post on Twitter.

"The crowd fled at the sound of gunshots," she continued. "Imagine the deaths if the shooter had a silencer, which the NRA wants to make easier to get. Our grief isn't enough. We can and must put politics aside, stand up to the NRA, and work together to try to stop this from happening again."

The FBI says that they have found no indicator connecting the suspected shooter to a terror group. Isis had said that they are responsible for the shooting.

Las Vegas Sheriff Joe Lombardo has revised the death toll from the shooting to 58, up from the previous total of 50. Another 515 people were injured, Mr Lombardo said during a media briefing.

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in 2011 during a constituent meeting, has released a statement following the deadly mass shooting in Las Vegas.

"Heartbroken by the scene our nation is waking up to this morning. No person should endure the horror Las Vegas experienced last night," Ms Giffords wrote on Twitter. "In just a matter of minutes, one man killed at least 50 people. Another 200 were injured. This is a grave tragedy for our nation."

"My heart is with the victims, their families and friends, and the law enforcement officers who risked their lives to save others," Ms Giffords continued.
